A 1930s Semi on Its Third Set of Slipped Slates

The problem: The owners had paid three different roofers over four years to refix slipped slates on the rear slope. Each repair held for a season. Our drone survey showed the real problem: the original nails had corroded across the whole slope, so every slate was on borrowed time, and the felt beneath had perished to dust.
What we did: Full strip of both slopes back to the rafters. Six rotten rafter feet cut out and spliced, new breathable membrane and treated battens, and a re-cover in fibre-cement slate matched to the neighbouring properties. Dry ridge throughout, new lead valleys and a re-flashed chimney. New uPVC roofline and guttering fitted while the scaffold was up.
The result: A watertight roof with a 20-year material warranty, completed in five working days. The roofline work added roughly 12% to the job because the access was already paid for — doing it separately a year later would have cost around a third more.

A Commercial Flat Roof Over a Live Trading Floor

The problem: A small retail unit with a 200m² torch-on felt roof laid in the late 1990s. Multiple blisters and splits, three separate leaks over stock, and standing water sitting in two areas after every downpour because the original falls were wrong. The unit could not close for the work.
What we did: Phased replacement in four sections so only one part of the roof was ever open. The old covering had failed because it was laid to falls that never worked, not because it was felt, so we stayed with a built-up system and fixed the cause. Wet insulation removed and the deck dried and repaired, new tapered insulation installed to create proper falls to the outlets, then a modern two-layer torch-on membrane with a mineral-surfaced cap sheet. New edge trims and outlets, and a replaced rooflight upstand, all dressed into the new covering.
The result: No trading days lost, no standing water, and a 20-year system guarantee. Insulation upgraded to current Building Regulations as part of the works, which the owner is seeing back in heating costs.

Ridge Tiles Off in a Gale, Made Safe the Same Day

The problem: An overnight storm lifted eleven ridge tiles from a two-storey detached house and dropped two of them through the roof of the single-storey garden room below. Water was entering the loft directly along the ridge line, and with the ridge two floors up the owners had no safe way of telling whether the rest of it was about to follow.
What we did: On site the same afternoon to make safe: a tower up to reach the ridge, the loose tiles taken off, the ridge line temporarily sealed and the garden-room roof sheeted over. A drone survey the following morning — faster and safer than getting a man up a two-storey roof twice — showed the mortar bedding had failed along the entire ridge, not just the section that had blown off. We returned with edge-protected scaffold and converted the full ridge to a mechanically fixed dry ridge system, and supplied a photographic report for the insurance claim.
The result: Watertight within hours of the call and permanently fixed within nine days, including the insurer's authorisation window. A dry ridge system doesn't rely on mortar, so it won't do the same thing again in the next gale.
